Permit Bylaws and Regulations
Each municipality across the Greater Toronto Area has its own building code and zoning rules, which may influence what’s possible in your backyard. In most cases, your swimming pool must be installed at least 4 feet away from both your property line and your home. This spacing ensures proper construction access and safety clearance.
Nearly all municipalities also require a non-climbable fence at least 4 feet high, enclosing the pool area to prevent unsupervised access—especially by children. Every entry point must feature a self-closing, self-latching gate that meets safety compliance.
Planning to enhance your space with hardscaping or landscaping? Some cities impose maximum hardscape ratios, which could limit your options for decking or paved surfaces.
Lastly, don’t forget about your equipment pad. Most municipalities require that pool equipment (like pumps and heaters) be installed at least 2 feet from any property line, and not placed directly against structures like fences or sheds.
